Vivobarefoot San-Dal

The San-Dal is a faithful recreation of the old running and hunting sandal of the Ju'hoansi people of the Kalahari in Namibia. Made in association with a small group of San shoemakers from the Nae Nae Conservancy and the Future Footwear Foundation, the San-Dal is made of tanned Eland (soles) and Springbok (uppers) leather - made entirely by hand by the direct descendants of the first humans.

To protect them from the hot burning sand and sharp thorns, the Ju/'Hoansi made sandals from eland leather, one of the thickest and most durable skins in Africa. They stopped making the sandals because hunting restrictions stopped the supply of skins, and today, only the elders of the tribe retain the knowledge and skills of how to make hunting sandals.
