When you are a parent you worry about your children and when you are a child you worry about your parents.
If you have both, children and parents, you worry all day long.
Does it sound familiar to you?
What they eat, their habits, their friends, how they dress... and of course what they wear.
And Ana, who is a daughter, writes to me very worried about her mother.
She says:
'My mother's feet are a mess and she has a lot of pain in the soles of her feet.
She has a bunion, her toes are cramped and one of them is lifted up and is almost on top of the toe next to it.
The proposed solution is to have an operation, but this is very painful and slow to recover, and at her age it is not clear that it would be "profitable" for her.
She normally wears conventional trainers like Nike or Skechers, which, being made of fabric, are less tight than shoes.
I have spoken to her about Correct toes and minimalist trainers, but being such an old person I think it all sounds very abstract to her.
So I was wondering if she could make the change to something more respectful of her feet or if at that age it's no longer possible.
If you think it could be good for her, I'll take her one day and take her to Marchena to try things on, although we'll have to change her mentality'.
Ana sees how her mother suffers every day, how she has lost part of her mobility, her independence.
She sees that she has grown old before her time, and how the pain in her feet prevents her from walking normally.
She sees how the operation, the remedy proposed to her, could be worse than the disease.
And she sees, and this is the important thing, that it may not be too late to change.
Because one thing is clear to me.
The human being, your body, your parents' body, has an extraordinary capacity to recover, to stay alive.
So it is never too late to improve, to change habits and beliefs.
Sometimes, our parents are reluctant to change. That's why I wouldn't "label" the shoe, I wouldn't name it, I would simply say it's a wider shoe.
Today in the café, I was listening to a group of women in their 70s having breakfast.
One said:
'Well, I don't want to die. I want to be here as long as possible, because I'll be there for a long time'.
Life above all else.
Because life is extraordinary for the simple reason that you are alive.
And to stay alive for a long time, don't stop moving.
More and better with healthy feet.
With less shoes and more feet.
