Would you rather have a new iPhone or a new knee?
This week's article is about the knee problems of a flight attendant and how it was solved by another member of the profession.
Paula works for Vueling, is young, under 30 and tall.
She calls Angel to tell him that her right knee hurts.
She felt a prick at work and then, the pain.
'Very rare.... must be the age', she says.
'It's what happens' - she finishes off as a sentence.
Paula is only 30 years old and blames the pain in her knee on her age.
Ángel asks her a couple of questions and, in response to her answers, sends her the following image:
When Paula saw the photo, she identified with it.
The image shows how the heel negatively affects the distribution of pressure on her knees and she recognises that her back also hurts, although less than the knee.
But in spite of that (pay attention, this is the important thing),
she tells Angel that her shoes have hardly any heels, 5 cm at most, and sends him the photo:
5 cm.
Not 1.
Not 0.5.
5.
And 5 is too low a heel for Paula.
The heel is so accepted in our society, even in small children of 2 or 3 years old, that 5 cm is seen as little, when it is a real barbarity.
And this is the real problem.
You put your foot in something hard, narrow, heavy, that changes your centre of mass and you see it as normal.
Without knowing that what your mother, grandmother and even your great-grandmother have always used causes serious problems for your knees, hips, back and feet.
In the long run you will want to move less, and the less you move, the more problems you will have.
Heel, pain, little movement and premature old age.
A sequence that never fails.
Try it.
Go barefoot and feel the balance of your body.
Now take a book of about 5 cm and support only your heels.
How does it feel?
Your balance has changed.
Your body leans backwards to keep you upright and the pressure on your knee is no longer even, wearing down the meniscus in some areas and affecting your tendons and ligaments.
After Angel explains all this to Paula, he recommends that she wear the flattest possible shoes, with no rear elevation and wide.
She says: "I'll tell "Mr. Vueling",
but I'm telling you, he's going to say no.
And Ángel told her about the case of the flight attendant who talked to his company about a similar issue and managed to get them to let him wear flat, wide shoes by medical prescription.
And he offers some alternatives of elegant shoes for everyday and work.
Movement and health starts with your feet.
